On the occasion of Studio per una performance processo sull’aborto (Study for a trial-performance on abortion), Lateral Roma became a space for collective inquiry, using the “trial-performance” format to explore the complexities of abortion. Grossi Maglioni created a site-specific installation that blended murals, drawing inspiration from institutional architecture in Carl Theodor Dreyer’s film La passion de Jeanne d’Arc, with lawyers’ costumes from the performance Corpo Molle, both integral to this ongoing research trajectory. The installation thus functioned as a scenographic setting for the project’s workshop, which sought to identify key elements and actions for a future performance.

For their exhibition at Lateral, Grossi Maglioni conceived a workshop in which the “trial-performance” format was deployed to collectively engage with the topic of abortion, while critically discussing the ongoing control exerted over women’s bodies and reproductive rights. The first day, dedicated to storytelling and collective study, was followed by a performative session that investigated bodily postures associated with abortion, set in contrast with the institutional authority visually represented through architectural drawings on the walls of the exhibition space. This process built upon Grossi Maglioni’s ongoing research into gestures of power. The collective work has been rhythmed by chants and songs selected by CANALE MILVA to bring into dialogue voices and struggles from yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
